Appeal: Just 18 miles north of the city of Boulder, Lyons is a wonderful small community surrounded by hills of ponderosa pine and areas of red sandstone. Lyons has several sandstone buildings which date back to the late 1800's and early 1900's which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Lyons is known as the "Double Gateway to the Rockies" because of the two different ways to reach Estes Park. One is through Colorado Hwy. 7 or Hwy. 36.
There are several antique shops, art galleries and restaurants which visitors often stop at while on their way to the Rocky Mountain National Park area just beyone the town of Estes Park.
Local facts: Ed Lyon came to this valley area in 1880 where the North St. Vrain and St. Vrain creeks merge to found the Evans Townsite Co. and the Lyons Rock and Lime Quarry Co., which quarried sandstone for Denver and other cities. The Town was platted into lots in 1881 and by 1884 it had its own railroad service and by 1891 was known as a municipality.
